Rev. Dr. Julius Jenkins has retired from Concordia College-Selma after almost four decades of service, the final 27 years as president. Under Jenkins’ visionary leadership, Concordia experienced significant change and growth.
From 1969 to 1973 he served as Registrar, Acting Dean of Students, Director of Financial Aid and Assistant Professor. From 1976 to 1979 he served as Academic Dean/Administrative Assistant to the President. He was named Interim President in 1979 and named President in 1980. At that time the school was known as Alabama Lutheran Academy and Junior College. In 1981 the academy closed, and the institution’s name changed to Concordia College-Selma. Two years later — in December 1983 — Concordia received initial accreditation from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a junior college. Jenkins, a graduate of Alabama Lutheran Academy and Junior College, led the planning and development to move from a junior college to a baccalaureate-degree granting institution. In December 1994, Concordia received accreditation as a four-year institution offering programs in early childhood and elementary education. In 1997 Concordia College-Selma received approval to offer a baccalaureate degree in business administration with an emphasis in management. Jenkins has successfully coordinated fundraising campaigns that led to the establishment of Concordia’s endowment, its technology infrastructure and the construction of five new buildings. Concordia has acquired additional property for further development to accommodate a larger enrollment. Jenkins was married to the late Mary Rawls Jenkins and is the father of Pamela and Christopher Jenkins. |
